Mernda Facts

Mernda is a suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia that lies 27km (16.8 miles) north-east of Melbourne's central business district. The local government of the area is the City of Whittlesea. The population of Mernda at the 2016 Census was 16,458.

Mernda was originally known as Morang and Yan Yean, before the two were combined and renamed Yan Yean South in 1893 and later to Mernda in 1913. The name Mernda is derived from the Wurundjeri word for earth. At the time that Mernda took its name it contained little more than a school, a Methodist church, a Catholic church, a bakery/store, a railway station and a mechanics' institute, as well as the Bridge Inn Hotel.

As Melbourne residents search for more affordable housing, the suburb's transformation in recent years from dairy pastures to development hotspot has become apparent. With population rapidly rising, the Victorian Government pushed forward the extension of the rail line to Mernda, which in turn had a positive effect on house prices in the suburb.
